Die-na-mite Halloween card

Dies can make a simple or boring project extra mighty... I want you to use your dies to make a project! They can be your main focus, or work in the background to make your project a little extra mighty.  

For my project, I chose to make a Halloween card. This year I am going to try really hard to get a few out to some family and a few special mail art friends I have been super neglecting for a while. 

To start I cut out the small pumpkin from the new Tim Holtz- "Pumpkin Patch, Colorize" die set. I added some of the new mica sprays to my black layer, and my top orange layer. I also lightly inked with vintage photo distress ink on the edges of each piece. To glue everything together I used collage medium (my go to matte glue).

Next, I went through my background box, and found a leafy background I had created using various distress inks and oxides with a Dylusions stencil (and water flicks of course).  I also had this wood frame sitting on my desk from another Idea that hadn't worked out like I wanted. I thought it looked so perfect with the leaves so I decided to add it (It was created using a 3D wood grain embossing folder on brown cardstock, then using a rectangle nesting die to cut out the center to create a frame). 

From here, I got in the groove, and totally forgot to take progress photos, but I stamped the "wishing you a spooky Halloween" from the "Monstrous" stamp set by Tim Holtz in black soot- Archival ink (since I am stamping over oxides I used my stamping tool to stamp it several times so that the color would really pop).

I also used white heat embossing with a spider web stamp from the "Tangled Webs" stamp set by Tim Holtz. 

The tiny bats I added were from the die set "Vault series: Halloween 2021" (Yes the pumpkin patch set comes with bats, but for whatever reason I liked these tiny bats better. lol).

To add to the look of the frame I added the screw heads to the corners of the frame. I thought this gave a little extra something to the look. I also added grit paste to the screws and the area around them for a worn texture (I used the new Halloween grit paste, but since I ended up covering it up any of the translucent grit paste would have worked). 

Once that was dry, I used distress crayons to make the wood grain pop more, and to add a bit of rusty/grunginess around the screws.  

Last to finish off the pumpkins, I used a white gel pen to add random highlights to the pumpkin so that it would really pop off of the card (which was adhered with pop-dots to give it dimension).

The new challenge is called "De-stressing with distressing"

The object is share a project with your favorite ways of distressing.

 My project was inspired by Stacy Hutchinson. you can see her project HERE.

I started with a smaller vignette box and a piece of paper from the Tim Holtz backdrops. I cute my paper to be able to cover all of the outer sides. ( I am still considering doing a 2nd project on the inside at a later date.) 

I cut my port hole and bits using the Sizzix Bigz die "Steampunk Parts". I used a combination of the old Distress powders, Distress stains, grit paste, and Distress crayons to get the rusty look. For the red part I used "rouge" Zing embossing powder.

You can see I flicked off a lot of the red embossing powder before heating for a more weathered look. then the stains and crayons filled in the gaps. The image is one of the Tim Holtz "found relatives". 

Since I loved how Stacy stitched around her pieces, I chose to do the same before gluing anything to my vignette box. 

After all of my paper pieces were glued on using Distress collage medium, I then added my crackle pastes, and decorative elements such as the "be brave". When everything was dry I used Distress inks, stains, and crayons to add a bit of grunge.

I also added a heat embossed fish to the front with white embossing powder and the stamp set "Sealife" by Tim Holtz. The string bits were extra left over bits from stitching the panels, and I liked the look of them so I also added them.

I chose to keep both simple since I may add to the inside still and if so not sure if I may choose to carry whatever onto the outer sides.)

some places are getting up to those triple digits, and we want you to work in 3's. 

(use 3 of an item, 3 colors, etc.)

For my card, I used 3 layers, 3 flowers, and 3 of each type of leaf. 

I started by cutting out all of my flower and leaf pieces from some of my Tim Holtz Kraft core cardstock. I then lightly sanded all of the pieces to expose some of the core for a more distressed look.

I used distress collage medium to glue everything together then used various distress inks and oxides to add extra color. (I did add walnut stain distress ink to all of the edges before assembling) 

The background paper I added was also from the Tim Holtz backdrops. I used walnut stain distress ink around the edges then added some white stitching.

I used kraft heavy cardstock for my card base, and the Tim Holtz black kraft core paper for my 2nd layer. (lightly sanded of course)

Next, I added some crackle paste in 3 different areas.

Once, it dried I used the walnut stain distress crayon to add detail and grunge to all the cracks, as well as along the stitching.

To finish the card off I added the "Best Day Ever" quote sticker over a scrap of gold, then mounted with pop dots.

Feeling like Royalty

I started by building up layers on a card base.

I used distress ink in walnut stain ink on the top 2 layers.

To create the top layers I used a Tim Holtz paper doll, one of the sets of transparent wings from Tim Holtz, and created a crown from a scrap of gold paper from Tim Holtz (which I embossed with the typeface 3d embossing folder). The gold belt was created with gold embossing powder. I used a retired Tim Holtz die to create my pink oval base from kraft core paper. Then, I hand cut a black boarder to add a base. 

(also I colored my paper doll with distress ink (dusty concord-then wiped to lighten) and alcohol markers (for rosy cheeks)

I used distress collage medium to glue everything together.

Next, I layered some of my Tim Holtz chipboard pieces.

I used pop dots, to add another layer of flowers, and more pop dots under my base.

The base layer for under my topper was created with the Tim Holtz basket weave 3d embossing folder.

I used, rustic wilderness distress ink to add depth. I spritzed everything with water to lighten it up and get it blended out.

I added the Tim Holtz foiled stickers to finish everything off.

Exciting News and a Tutorial

Hello Crafty Friends!

Today I can finally announce that I made the Funkie Junkie Boutique Design Team!!!

That means I will finally be back to blogging at least every other Wednesday! If you aren't familiar with The Funkie Junkie Boutique you should definitely check it out. She is a small online store, but she also host bi-weekly challenges for inspiration and to help with creative mojo. (I know I have been in a creative funk, so that's one of the reasons I applied to get my creative juices moving and in a different direction)

(plus you know I love Holtzy and grungy goodness which is a lot of what the "Frilly and Funkie" challenge blog is all about. There will be lots of shabby chic and grungy goodness <3

Ok, on to my tag tutorial...

This year I am working on my perennial pollinator garden. Mom and I went Saturday to get some flowers, and just hang out. (Boy was it hot!!) Anyhow that's what inspired this butterfly tag.

I started by inking some cardstock with some distress oxide inks in - crackling campfire, salvaged patina, and fossilized amber. I die cut the tag from that paper then lightly inked with a little walnut stain distress ink. I also cut out a tag slightly bigger to layer behind it.

Next, I used the text stamp from CMS410 "Specimen" and white embossing powder

For the frame, I used the 3D impresslit I cut it out of some of Tim's kraft core paper. I then lightly sanded the high spots. I added a little walnut stain ink on the high spots, then used an embossing dauber and clear powder. After it was heated I used the walnut stain crayon to add more grunge.

I used my sewing machine to stitch the 2 tags together.  Then I used distress collage medium to glue down my frame. I then used my tiny attacher to attach the "transparent wings", then I poked holes to wire my pen nib.

(I should have done all this before adding the bottom tag, but oh well)

Next, I added a quote from one of Tim Holtz's gold foiled sets. I sanded the edges and glued them on scraps of black paper.

I then began to work on the ribbon.

I wanted it darker, so I inked again with the 2 above.

Also when I had everything finished I used black soot stain to add a few extra flicks of ink for added grunge.

Tags and Tabs

 Hello Again Crafty Friends!

Been working on some super fun field guide/entomology style tags... 
But not just any tags... pocket tags!!! 

(I got the inspiration from another blogger HERE) 

To create my pocket tags I created my own cut file in brother canvas workspace (for the scanNcut machine). You can easily do this with dies or punches too. 

I used paper from graphic 45 (Natures sketchbook), some Tim Holtz remnant rubs, Tim Holtz tiny clips, and some Tim Holtz ephemera and snippets... I used a few other bits I could find in my stash. 

(Also I made these before my sewing machine broke... so hopefully I'll get to make some more soon. I just love that the stitching adds that extra something... Although I found that stitching the inner tag does make it harder to slide in and out... In the future I may just use my stitching stamps on the inner tags)
